Signifying Nothing
SPOILER ALERT - do i have to put this for a book that’s so old? i dunno. but i will.
this book is fucked for so many reasons. i know there have been many lengthy, well-written feminist critiques of this book and i really have nothing new to add to the discussion, also the book came out a while ago so i am very behind the times.
but i had to vent!
putting aside the issues i have with bella’s infatuation with edward and her constant thoughts about how he IS her life and she’s nothing without him, and the fact that he’s sexually abusive and she blames herself for it, and the fact that she agreed to get married just so they could have sex (because pre-marital sex takes away your soul)….putting all that aside, i’m seriously shocked at how blatantly pro-life this last book is. bella is impregnated with a vampire baby that is literally sucking the blood out of her and yet she refuses to have an abortion because its life is more important than hers. just like edward’s life is more important than hers. this message is so fucked up, that abortion is unthinkable even if the mother’s LIFE is at risk. this is some sarah palin-no-exceptions-even-for-rape-or-incest bullshit.
fuck you, stephenie meyer.
